2023 saw thousands of revelers flock to music festivals around the world! Live music enthusiasts gathered in huge numbers to meet more like-minded people, discover fresh talents, or music from genres you weren’t a fan of before. Music festivals bring people from all over the world together to connect with one another, transcending language barriers and other boundaries for the sole purpose of enjoying music. From Tomorrowland to the New Orleans Jazz Festival, we look at music festivals that have drawn more than 200,000 people this year!

Glastonbury Festival – 210,000

Glastonbury Festival is among the most popular music festivals held in the UK. This year, 210,000 partygoers headed to Somerset, England, for the five-day music festival in June. Big names like Elton John, Arctic Monkeys, Lana Del Rey, Guns N’ Roses, Lil Nas X, and more took the Glastonbury festival stage this year. British drum & bass band Rudimental, English DJ/producer Fatboy Slim, Scottish producer duo LF System, English DJ/producer, songwriter, and sound engineer Sub Focus, DnB and jungle DJ, producer, singer-songwriter Nia Archives, and Jyoty, among others, were also on the bill. The many areas at Glastonbury provide different unforgettable experiences. Attendees can also enjoy a host of activities, including circus, dance, cabaret, comedy, and theatre. Since starting in 1970, Glastonbury Festival has drawn in hundreds of thousands of revelers annually.

Outside Lands – 225,000

Held at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, Outside Lands is a multi-genre, three-day music festival. Non-stop house music all weekend, the best of the Bay Area for your taste buds, an assortment of wines and beers, uniquely crafted cocktails, street art, music from some of the established artists and finest talents, and lots more are the features of the festival. In addition to buying festival merchandise, ravers can also support local businesses by shopping at the Outside Lands Marketplace.

Outside Lands is taking steps towards sustainability by helping reduce single-use bottle waste with a refillable water program, waste diversion, reusable festival cups, and more. Drawing 225,000 people, the festival took place from August 11 – 13 this year, with renowned rapper Kendrick Lamar, rock band Foo Fighters, and electronic music duo Odesza as the headliners. They shared the stage with other popular artists such as Lana Del Rey, Megan Thee Stallion, Manhattan rock band Interpol, Janelle Monáe, rapper and singer-songwriter JID, WILLOW, Indonesian singer-songwriter NIKI, Ethel Cain, rapper and singer-songwriter Lil Yatchy, and EDM stars Australian DJ/producer Fisher, Zedd, and Diesel (Shaquille O’Neal). This year marked 15 years of the Outside Lands Festival.

Montreux Jazz Festival – 250,000

Montreux Jazz Festival, one of the most popular jazz music festivals in the world, is held on the Lake Geneva shoreline every year in July. This year, the festival saw 250,000 people in attendance grooving to some of the most talented artists on the planet. Montreux Jazz Festival hosts epic acoustic performances and concerts in a jaw-dropping venue between Lake Geneva and the Alps. Attendees also get a chance to partake in gripping workshops and iconic jam sessions.

Primavera Sound Barcelona – 253,000

Some of the biggest acts in music were assembled at the Parc del Forum in Barcelona for Primavera Sound 2023. Held from May 29 – June 4, the festival was headlined by Halsey, English rock band Blur, English electronic music band Depeche Mode, Kendrick Lamar, Calvin Harris, and Spanish singer-songwriter Rosalía. Hardcore punk band Turnstile, Skrillex, British singer-songwriter FKA Twigs, Four Tet, St. Vincent, English DJ/producer and multi-instrumentalist Fred Again, American indie group The Moldy Peaches, NxWorries, and techno star Belgian DJ/producer Charlotte de Witte were also on the roster.

Primavera Sound pulled over 253,000 revelers in 2023. Fans of different genres can experience live music from the biggest names on the planet as well as fresher talents you hadn’t heard of. The 2024 edition of the festival will be held from May 29-June 2. New York rock band Vampire Weekend, FKA Twigs, English electronic music duo Disclosure, SZA, rock band The National, Charli XCX, English rock band Pulp, and singer-songwriter Mitski are slated to headline the event.

Tomorrowland – 400,000

Tomorrowland is one of the most popular EDM festivals in the world. People from far and wide flock to the music festival in large numbers, and some even have it on their bucket lists! So, it’s not surprising that the music festival giant attracted 400,000 visitors in 2023 across two weekends from July 21 – 30, 2023. Over 750 of the finest electronic music artists from all over the world descended across 16 stunning stages at the 17th edition of Tomorrowland. The theme for the year was ‘Adscendo.’

The festival was transformed into a land of magic, with dance music stars laying out fiery tunes for partygoers to dance to all weekend. Tale of Us, Alesso, James Hype, Lost Frequencies, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Amelie Lens, DJ Tennis, and Armin van Buuren have played at Tomorrowland 2023, along with Tom & Collins, MATTN, Brazilian DJ/producer Öwnboss, MARTEN HØRGER, Gorgon City, Nina Kravoz, Afrojack, Indira Paganotto. Tomorrowland returns to Boom, Belgium, on July 19 – 21 and July 26 – 28, 2024.

Lollapalooza Chicago – 400,000

Lollapalooza has something for everyone! From electronic dance music, hip-hop, and pop, to rock, punk rock, and heavy metal, everyone is bound to have a lovely time at this music festival. Music booms through the speakers at nine stages as the festival welcomes 150+ acts to deliver unforgettable performances for the attendees. This year, Lollapalooza Chicago saw 400,000 people singing, dancing, and having a jolly good time at Grant Park, amidst the scenic Chicago skyline and the Lake Michigan shores, from August 3 – 6, 2023.

Big names like pop sensation Billie Eilish, seventeen-time Grammy-winning rapper Kendrick Lamar, electronic music duo Odesza, rock band Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Colombian singer-songwriter Karol G, The 1975, South Korean boy band TOMORROW X TOGETHER, and Lana Del Rey were the headliners of the four-day music festival. The festival also brought in Singer-songwriter Noah Kahan, New Orleans rock band The Revivalists, Rina Sawayama, Nigerian rapper, and singer-songwriter Rema, Sabrina Carpenter, and many more thrilling artists.

Sziget – 420,000

Held on a massive island on the Danube, the Sziget festival puts up more than a thousand shows across 60 stages over the course of six days. It is one of the biggest music festivals in Europe, where people from more than a hundred nationalities gather in Budapest, Hungary, to experience the joy of the Sziget Festival in August. This year, the festival opened its doors to more than 420,000 people. In addition to music, art also plays a huge role at Sziget. Artists and performers from all over the world head to Sziget to exhibit their artistic skills before the masses. Attendees can visit the museum quarter, the circus, or the theater to make the most of the festival experience.

Florence + The Machine, Billie Eilish, Imagine Dragons, Macklemore, Mumford & Sons, and Lorde appeared as headliners at the festival. Niall Horan, British rock band Foals, Italian DJ/producer duo Tale of Us, German DJ Sven Väth, Norwegian singer-songwriter and record producer Girl in Red, DJ Tennis, Parra for Cuva, and more graced the Sziget stage in 2023. The first wave of acts for 2024 has been announced; they include Sam Smith, Fred Again…, Four Tet, Stormzy, Louis Tomlinson, Martin Garrix, Aurora, Becky Hill, ARTBAT, and more.

New Orleans Jazz Festival – 460,000

The New Orleans Jazz Festival has massive cultural significance; it celebrates local music and culture every year and attendees get an opportunity to enjoy indigenous music styles! They can taste the best of Louisiana’s cuisine, visit fascinating arts and crafts booths, and concerts from some of the greats. This year, 460,000 people flocked to the New Orleans Jazz Festival in New Orleans, Louisiana, and witnessed artists like Denver-based alternative folk band The Lumineers, Louisiana-born singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, bandleader Jon Batiste, soul singer-songwriter and producer Leon Bridges, Ed Sheeran, Jill Scott, and Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue, to name a few. The New Orleans Jazz Festival announced that they are expanding to 8 days in 2024 from Thursday, April 25 – Sunday, April 28, 2024 to Thursday, May 2 – Sunday, May 5, 2024.

Amsterdam Dance Event – 500,000

500,000 revelers made their way to the five-day electronic music affair Amsterdam Dance Event from October 18 – 22, 2023. Thousands of artists performed across hundreds of venues for the event. West African-born DJ/producer AMÉMÉ, Marco Carola, Armin Van Buuren, Solomun, German DJ/producer offering house and tech house tunes Claptone, Belgian DJ/producer and Lenske record label boss Amelie Lens, Charlotte De Witte, German DJ/producer Boris Brejcha, Camelphat, and more dance music stars have showcased their skills at ADE this year.

EDC Las Vegas – 525,000

The Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas offered an immersive experience to 525,000 ravers this year. On its spellbinding nine stages, the festival hosted world-class DJs including Zedd, Australian DJ/producer and singer Alison Wonderland, Marshmello, Dutch DJ/producer Tiesto, Australian music producer Fisher, English DJ/producer James Hype, Australian house music producer Dom Dolla, American DJ/producer and remixer Kaskade, British EDM DJ/producer Chris Lake, and more. The astounding art installations are a sight for the sore eyes, and the fun-filled carnival rides are something the partygoers wouldn’t want to miss. EDC Las Vegas is another must-visit event for dance music fans.

Summerfest – 624,407

Summerfest celebrated its 55th anniversary this year. A whopping 624,407 partygoers attended Summerfest in 2023. Hundreds of bands take the stage at Summerfest over the course of three weekends in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Country music singer-songwriter Eric Church and ‘Ex’s and Oh’s’ hitmaker Elle King, singer-songwriter and guitarist James Taylor, Sheryl Crow, Odesza with Bonobo (DJ set), DRAMA, and QRTR & OLAN to name a few graced the Summerfest stage in 2023.

SOFI TUKKER, Ava Max, Japanese Breakfast, Lord Huron, flock rock band The Avett Brothers, and Earth, Wind & Fire among many many incredible acts were also on the bill. The lakefront venue makes for a perfect location for a music festival wherein attendees can enjoy local Milwaukee food and drinks. Hundreds of marketplace vendors are also available, festival goers can also go shopping at the festival and take home souvenirs.
