What initiated as a flock of mates congregating in the outdoors for a weekend of music and camping has now trickled down into one of Aotearoa’s most beloved boutique music and arts festivals. Located one hour outside of Auckland and fanned across five stages, the 2024 edition of Shipwrecked will feature over 100 of the top underground electronic and live music acts, performance artists, art, workshops, bars, food, and more.
Shipwrecked’s leading man Logan Baker spoke to us about the music and arts extravaganza, touching on the festival journey since 2016, its challenges, and what makes the festival so special. He says, “Shipwrecked is a unique site with huge shipwrecked boats, upside down, on stilts or in the ground, bass amphitheater, lakeside humming huts, and a jetty. Fresh water lake and beach. One thing that amazes everyone is the attention to detail, stage design, and the sound systems purring at just the right loudness to feel but not make you deaf.”
“Some of the challenges that we face are/have been licensing, COVID-19, cyclones, and financial. With every dollar and more put into the project in one way or another it’s a wonder we are still here. With a very amazing team behind the scenes, we are all really lucky to bring our magical site to life year after year,” adds Logan.
Dipping into the electronic line-up, the festival welcomes disco/techno veteran Amanda ‘Amandamania’ Wright, bass producer Ashez, breakbeat and jungle force Bavhu, DJ/producer Christopher Tubbs, DnB/house artist Coco, deep house/techno ace Jake Rattler, Kiwi DnB cornerstone Paige Julia, festival regular Frank Booker, soulful bass meets electronica musician Mia Kober, and UK-based music production duo Mystic State (Will Marquiss and Mike Holliday) to name a few.
Selectors artists Bing, Emma Tree, Marcos Alonso, Patsy Skeet, and more pile onto Shipwrecked’s Lucky Star Stage, helmed by AlleyKat and Matt Rapid. Live music oozing indie surf, soul, folk, rock, blues, and reggae beams from The Huneybee Wild (Elise Adlam and Pea Murray), Lucky Star All-Stars, Michael Barker and The Noise, Tyson Smith, and KITA fame Nikita Tu-Bryant. Attendees will also be delighted by performances by showman/stunt artist Burns The Dragon, storytelling with Darcy Lamington, coffee with Melfunction, and much more!
Wellington-based songwriter/DJ Tyson Smith docks at Shipwrecked for his third appearance at the upcoming showcase. This year, Smith gets a double-billing on the card, performing a solo live set and a DJ set as Tysonidero + Cece. Tyson shares, “I have only positive memories of the festival and I’m obviously coming back for more! While these challenges might have tipped the balance for some event organizers, if anything it seems like it spurs Logan and the crew on to keep fighting the good fight – to continue nurturing the oasis of fun, quirky, creative vibes that is Shipwrecked, and I’m looking forward to being part of it again.”
When we reached out to musician Te Manu, he shared a few words of praise for the stage ace Dylan C, saying, “Just want to acknowledge Dylan C who curates the Hidden Reef lineup. The lineup this year is looking awesome and it’s owed to Dylan closing a diversity of artists within the realm of bass music. It’s a great site with great sound systems and everything looks amazing!”
So anchor at Shipwreck, where you will also be treated to four specially crafted bars offering non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages, free water refilling stations (BYO reusable bottles), multiple food vendors serving delicious meals, and a market space dishing out festival merch. Shipwrecked aims to be a zero-waste and leave-no-trace festival affair.
