Ahmedabad-based versatile songwriter and guitarist Chirag Todi continues to pile genre-fluid compositions to his thriving music ledger, recently releasing his debut multilingual album ‘Bangers Only.’
Spanning ten songs, including six of his earlier single releases, this tracklist wheels in collaborative efforts from lynchpins of the Indian music scene with names such as Dot., Ramya Pothuri, RANJ, Meera, Chezin, Divyang Arora, M.S Krsna, Anubha Kaul, Pushkar Srivatsal, Siddharth Basrur and many more, excellently stamping on their signature traits.
“This album is the cumulation of my songwriting work over the last two years. The multi-genres and languages boast my versatility as a songwriter and my collaborative skills,” communicated Chirag via a press statement.
Among the four new additions and a swarm of talented artists, ‘Bangers Only’ also sees Chirag mark his first vocal performance singing on ‘Walking On a Minefield.’ This single was produced by Raag Sethi at Compass Box Studio and speaks to “sacrifices made, trust given, and love poured out, all in vain,” while forging a cheery indie pop tune that flows with strummy guitars, bright key arrangements via Kandarp Kavishwar, electric guitar patches and steady drum rhythms from Pritul Chauhan.
Featured next is Meera, who layers her honeyed vocals on ‘Saaya,’ a Hindi-worded wavy ballad reeling in the lyrical prowess of musician Sreenath Sreenivasan and dainty flute and claret undertones from Harmish Joshi.
After concocting the mega-hit ‘Desire’ (2020), Chirag partners up with singer-songwriter Pushkar Srivatsal once again, this time delivering a groovy bop on ‘Ooty Dreams.’ Caressed by Tamil vocals courtesy of M.S Krsna, the duo carves out a flashy funk/disco beat seasoned with a sleek guitar riff and a retro-esque production.
‘Crafted Lies’ rounds out the EP, hooking in the vocalist, composer, and Indian rock/metal stalwart Siddharth Basrur, duly shifting the record to a heavier sound. Coupled with Madhav Mehta’s slamming drum routines, Basrur ups the ante with his raspy vocals, paired with charred guitar riffs and clanging bass lines to deliver a hard-hitting production.
Elaborating on his songwriting process on this album, Chirag expressed, “My natural instinct is to write my musical ideas through my instrument first, which typically translates into a ‘guitar riff’. I take this to a producer and vocalist to work on the overall arrangement and melody. My guitar playing and unique style are common across all the songs which makes this album quite unique as it’s led by a guitarist.”
