Returning for its sixth edition after a break of three years, The BiG BANG! Festival of Love will stem from Assam’s stunning Nanadisa village and pour out oodles of live music and dance performances, host multiple workshops, and amplify local culture.
Slated to be held from October 26 onwards in Nanadisa, one of the oldest Dimasa villages in the Dima Hasao district, this two-day family-friendly affair is rooted in love, community, and the preservation of Indigenous traditions. It was developed by folk musician/activist Daniel Langthasa and entrepreneur Avantika Roohi Haflongbar.
The theme for 2024 reads ‘Village is the future,’ and the promoters have mapped out a showcase that will emphasize the importance of local communities, sustainable lifestyles, and the potential of nature-based solutions for improving the environment while also celebrating music, culture, and the Indigenous way of life.
Peering into the diverse artist line-up, you will find Blues powerhouse vocalist Tipriti Kharbangar, rapper and activist MC Mawali, reggae artist MC Delhi Sultanate and his dub collective BFR Sound System (hand-built at the venue), trombone and trumpet player Chie Nishikori, reggae producer Ras ManMan, cult grunge outfit Ahimxa, Daniel Langthasa’s Digital Suixide and hard rock band Soultree, to name a few.
Away from the music stage, activities also incorporated are a Jhum Farm Tour (a stroll around the hillside where visitors can discover a centuries-old farming method), workshops on handloom and bamboo weaving, camping, Judima brewing (traditional rice wine made by skilled women brewers), chef Roohi Haflongbar’s cookery class with local produce, medicinal plant walks with the village headman and traditional herbalist, etc.
In a press statement, the co-founders shared, “Music has always been a powerful way to communicate ideas and provoke thought, and through The BiG BANG! Festival, we wanted to merge this with a message of sustainability, alternative worldviews, and Indigenous wisdom.”
“We’ve seen how global movements for change have been sparked through music — whether it was punk rock, reggae, or hip-hop. At the BiG BANG! Festival, we want to use music as a tool to ignite the same kind of consciousness. It’s a universal language that can inspire people to see the world differently, and through our carefully curated lineup of artists, we hope to channel the energy of the festival into something bigger than just entertainment.”
The BiG BANG! and BFR Soundsystem were also selected as one of five projects globally to receive support from Worldwide FM and DJ Gilles Peterson’s grassroots music funding initiative in collaboration with Studio Monkey Shoulder launched in April of this year.
