Hoxton Hall remains open and active, presenting a rolling programme rather than a conventional long theatre season. Expect intimate concerts, jazz, singer-songwriters, alternative music, theatre, opera, comedy, cabaret, circus and immersive performance. These sit alongside heritage events, creative-health sessions, youth projects, workshops and free community celebrations. The artist-run Hidden Jazz Club has become a particularly recognisable recurring night.

The post-pandemic programme shows the venue’s range. Productions and events since 2021 have included No Fear! with Linda Marlowe, Gothic Opera’s La Nonne Sanglante, circus, seasonal pantomime and the locally created Hoxton Street. Other bookings have ranged from Kojey Radical, Kevin Morby and Dave Gorman to National Opera Studio, immersive Verdi, A Christmas Carol, new plays, experimental cabaret and family productions.

More recent programming has included Gothic Opera’s Rip Van Winkle, the Indigenous and baroque music-theatre production The Mouth of the Gods, immersive work such as Bacchanalia, special concerts by The Lumineers and regular jazz. The 2026 programme has confirmed the same eclectic direction, with alternative artists, singer-songwriters, jazz, comedy, cabaret, new theatre and heritage participation represented. Bookings have included Hannah Cohen, Haley Heynderickx, Nia Smith, Jazz Sabbath, Adam Buxton, Hayden Thorpe and Genevieve Stokes.

Community programming is not an occasional add-on. Activate! explores the stories of women connected with Hoxton Hall through talks, exhibitions, tours and creative projects, whilst Strictly Hoxton supports older residents through dance and social activity. Annual or seasonal events include Fun Palace, Open House tours, school-holiday workshops and youth-led productions. Longer-range public programming is generally announced on a rolling basis rather than as a fixed multi-year season.

Tickets and Booking

Tickets can be bought through Hoxton Hall’s own event listings, by telephone or in person at the box office. The regular box-office schedule is Monday to Friday, 10am–6pm, with service beginning 90 minutes before performances. Electronic tickets may be shown on a phone or printed. For popular intimate concerts, book early: a capacity of only a few hundred means high-profile appearances can sell out quickly.

There is no single venue-wide price band. Community workshops and heritage activities are frequently free, many shows offer concessions, and promoter-led concerts are priced individually. Hoxton Hall is a Grade II* listed Victorian music hall and community arts venue at 130 Hoxton Street, London N1 6SH. For the most direct view, choose central ground-floor seating. The front of the first gallery gives an excellent overview of the stage and historic auditorium, but balcony access involves steps. Extreme side benches can have partial obstructions from curtains or band equipment, so they are less suitable when seeing every musician matters. Getting There and Parking

Hoxton station is the most convenient public-transport option, around five minutes away on foot and offering step-free access. Old Street Underground is approximately 10–15 minutes away, Shoreditch High Street around 10–20 minutes, and Liverpool Street roughly 20 minutes. Useful buses include the 149 and 242 from Liverpool Street; the 67, 149, 242 and 243 from Hackney; and the 394 from Angel. Cycle parking is available near the Hoxton Trust Community Garden.

Driving is discouraged because Hoxton Hall has no visitor car park. Limited on-street parking has been advertised at about £7 per hour from 7.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays. Hoxton Street closes for the market on Saturdays, the area is within the Ultra Low Emission Zone and it sits close to the Congestion Charge Zone. No dedicated taxi or rideshare bay is advertised, so arrange a legal nearby collection point and allow for market closures.

Inside the Venue

The published technical specification lists a Midas M32 digital mixing desk and an EM Acoustics system with left-right stalls speakers, a centre cluster, side fills, subwoofers and rear-circle delays. Monitor wedges, microphones and DI boxes are available, but the venue does not provide band backline. Projection can use a rear white cyclorama, subject to equipment availability.

Lighting provision includes an ETC Ion console, 48-channel dimming and relay infrastructure, LED moving washes, moving profiles, Selecon LED profiles and DMX-controlled house lights. Five movable trusses run along the auditorium, and six ceiling rigging points support suitably planned circus and aerial work. Only water-based haze is permitted to protect the listed fabric. Because the downloadable pack dates from 2021, visiting productions should reconfirm inventory and staffing requirements.

What Makes Hoxton Hall Special

James Mortimer opened the building in 1863 as Mortimer Hall, combining affordable amusement with education. James McDonald acquired it in 1866, renamed it McDonald’s Music Hall and enlarged the galleries in 1867. Music, circus turns and even performing dogs appeared, but McDonald lost the entertainment licence in 1871. Later work restored altered balconies and secured neighbouring Hoxton Works as an income-generating creative building. A major £2 million refurbishment completed in 2015 installed a lift, stabilised the structure, reinstated historic fire surrounds, laylights and sunburners, exposed original cast-iron windows and introduced modern production infrastructure. Fire-safety doors were sensitively upgraded again in 2024.

Visitor Tips and Accessibility

The ground-floor entrance, reception, bar, Main Hall floor, dressing room and toilets include step-free provision. The main entrance has an automated wide door, reception has a lower desk, and movable ground-floor seating allows wheelchair spaces to be incorporated. A lift serves every floor, but the first- and second-floor balcony rows still require several steps, so wheelchair users should normally book the ground floor.

Three accessible toilets are located on the ground, basement and second floors. Limited complimentary companion tickets are available, assistance dogs are accepted for most events, and priority entry can be arranged for visitors unable to queue.
