SOUTHERN AIR TEMPLE (top floor)
7:30pm Mamadou Sidibe (Malian)
Master kamale ngoni player, Mamadou Sidibe is from the Wassoulou Region of Mali, West Africa. 30 years ago Mamadou played a groundbreaking role in transforming the music of this region from it's origins in hunters' sacred melodies--played on six string donso ngoni (hunter's harps)-- to a music of philosophical observations, politics and daily life. Mamadou was one of the first to expand the instrument's range by adding extra strings, creating the popular kamale ngoni. Mamadou, with artists Coumba Sidibe, Oumou Sangare and Ramatu Diakite, spread the new sounds through recordings and performances in Europe, Africa and the United States. Not only is Mamadou a master of the kamale ngoni, he is accomplished on several other African instruments as well.
9pm: Azúcarada (Mexican Son Jarocho)
Bay Area musicians Monica Fimbrez & Cassandra Millspaugh play Son Jarocho, a folk genre of music from Veracruz, Mexico with Indigenous, Spanish, African and Arabic roots. It combines elements of call and response singing, improvisation, percussive dancing, and community participation. The "Fandango" is the natural setting for Son Jarocho. Fandangos are festive events where the whole community can come listen, eat, sing, dance and play, regardless of level of musicianship. Azúcarada is dedicated to studying and sharing their love for Son Jarocho, music they sincerely believe cultivates joy, opens hearts, and heals.
11pm: Metanastys (Turkish/Greek)
Traditional Turkish and Greek music played by Jarolim Gayri (guitar, bouzouki, vocals), Marco Ghezzo (violin), and Jonathan Kipp (percussion). “wildly tender, well-intentioned disruptive music by some immigrants. neither uncanny nor too comfy.” Watch this awesome video of Metanastys performing at Balkan Sundays at Little Boabab in SF.
1am: Los Alegres Callejeros (Afro-Colombian Cumbia)
Alegre means cheerful, Callejero means street performer. Traditional Colombian style of Cumbia and range to (Peruvian) Chicha, Salsa, and Boleros. Having played at numerous Oakland street fairs and most recently at both SF and Oakland Carnavals, band members have roots from Colombia, Peru, Guatemala, Mexico, and Chile, and draw from long traditions to bring forward a distinct musical experience. Whether upbeat Latin dance music or slow hypnotic minor key vamps, their melodies are infectious and their rhythms are guaranteed to make you move & groove!
2:30am: KR3TURE (live electronic folk)

We also run a large Facebook group, World Folk Music and Dance (Bay Area), to help the community publicize its events.
