Events and Programming

The 1896 is not a conventional concert hall with a nightly calendar. It is primarily a film, television and photography facility that becomes a public venue for selected concerts, warehouse parties, fashion presentations, art fairs, product launches and immersive experiences. Events may use one room, three indoor stages or the entire complex, including the private courtyard. That flexibility has made electronic music, multidisciplinary performance and visually ambitious productions the venue’s most consistent public programming.

As of August 24, 2026, the announced public calendar includes Sistek on October 30, followed by house and tech-house duo HILLS on October 31. Both bookings continue The 1896’s strong association with Halloween weekend, electronic music and promoter-built warehouse productions. No confirmed 2027 public event was found in the listings reviewed, although the space continues accepting private productions and event rentals.

The documented public record between 2021 and 2026 is necessarily incomplete because many rentals are private, invitation-only or listed without the venue name until shortly before the event. No verifiable public 2021 event surfaced in the archives reviewed. In 2022, confirmed programming included a music-and-art experiential event in June, a private-community party later that month and a July performance by Movie Club. ticketfairy.com

Public activity expanded in 2023. A New York Fashion Week dance event brought Carlita, Mita Gami, SG Lewis, Ahmed Spins, DESIREE and others to the space. Later bookings included a three-stage Kater Blau warehouse takeover, the electronic-focused Nights of Mystique Halloween weekend and A New Dawn, a New Year’s Eve production combining DJs, live musicians, aerial performance, projection mapping, burlesque and visual art.

In 2024, the recurring Masquerade returned with Mira, Sainte Vie, Sabo, MoBlack and a large supporting lineup. A December multi-act night was publicly listed with Drab Majesty, Safemind, Lightning Bolt and Deli Girls, showing that the venue can also accommodate synth, experimental and noise-rock audiences rather than booking only house and techno.

Highlights from 2025 included a New York Fashion Week runway presentation, the Masquerade with Satori, Christian Löffler, Robag Wruhme and ELIF, a daytime Brazilian-inspired beauty-brand activation, and Into the Dawn, an overnight music-and-art event featuring Brina Knauss, EarthLife, SKIY, Mashrik, KYRUH and WTCHCRFT. White Lodge Halloween added another large seasonal party.

The Masquerade returned in April 2026 with Julya Karma, Rampue, Britta Arnold, Chris Schwarzwälder, Sarah Wild, Lovecraft and others. Its three-stage, indoor-outdoor format, costume requirement and sunrise-oriented schedule typify what The 1896 does especially well: events that treat the entire warehouse complex as an environment rather than placing one act on a standard proscenium stage.

Recent advertised ticket prices for major public events have generally fallen between about $35 and $100. Smaller concerts or early-release tiers may cost less, while elaborate New Year’s Eve, fashion-week and multi-stage productions tend to occupy the upper end. Prices, fees, door availability and VIP upgrades are set by each promoter rather than by The 1896 itself.

Tickets and Booking

Purchase admission through the authorized event listing displayed with the current schedule. Because The 1896 has no continuous public box office, do not arrive expecting a daytime ticket window. Promoters control onsales, presales, age requirements, door sales and ticket-transfer rules. Popular Masquerade, New Year’s Eve and Halloween productions can reach their final tiers or sell out in advance.

For high-demand events, buy when the lineup and venue are formally confirmed, verify whether the ticket is timed or general admission, and save the ticket to your phone before traveling. Some past events have released limited door tickets, but that is not guaranteed. Check the event instructions for the entrance: public guests are commonly directed to 592 Johnson Avenue, while production access frequently uses 211 or 215 Ingraham Street.

About The 1896

The venue occupies four connected industrial buildings erected in 1896 during Bushwick’s manufacturing boom. Census records described the original operation as “The Power Company,” a factory producing electrical conduit for the rapidly electrifying city. Surviving features include century-old textured walls, clerestory skylights, steel roof structures, a smokestack, an original freight elevator and gear room, a wrought-iron balcony and a brick-lined courtyard.

Sculptor and scenic painter Jen Durbin discovered the buildings in 2007 while seeking a new home for her artist-studio operation. The 1896 opened in 2008 as a production facility, with two additional former factory buildings acquired in 2016. It remains a family-run, woman-founded business and reserves space for approximately 30 artist studios, workshops and creative-service businesses alongside its commercial stages.

The broader campus covers approximately 26,000 square feet, while the four principal event areas total roughly 11,000 to 12,000 square feet. The venue is a Level 1 Qualified Production Facility and has hosted film, editorial and promotional work involving performers including Beyoncé, Madonna, David Bowie, Lupita Nyong’o, Dave Chappelle, Gemma Chan and Ethan Hawke.

Seating and Layout

There are no permanent audience seats. Concerts and dance events are generally standing-room experiences, while chairs, platforms, bars, lounges and VIP areas are installed for individual productions. Without a Temporary Permit of Assembly, the venue states a maximum of 275 people for an all-access gathering. Properly permitted large events can accommodate up to approximately 1,200 guests, depending on the approved floor plan, exits and staging.

Area 3 is the main hall: approximately 4,000 square feet, measuring 50 by 80 feet, with a 37-foot peak formed by a 30-foot steel-girder ceiling and seven-foot skylight structure. The venue estimates about 500 standing or roughly 175 seated guests in a comfortable event layout. Its scale makes it the natural location for a headline stage, projection installation or formal presentation.

Area 2 measures approximately 50 by 52 feet, providing 2,600 square feet beneath a 24-foot A-frame ceiling. Area 4 is approximately 41 by 49 feet and 2,000 square feet, with a 37-foot peak, no skylights and an overlooking mezzanine or client loft. Each works well as a supporting dance floor, gallery, lounge or secondary performance room.

The courtyard provides about 1,500 square feet, while the adjoining private drive adds approximately 1,100 square feet. The drive is narrow and alley-like, opening through a loading bay onto Johnson Avenue. Organizers use these exterior areas for arrival, food service, art installations, outdoor music or decompression space, although rain plans may relocate programming indoors.

Sound quality depends heavily on the visiting production. The venue does not publish a permanent concert PA make or model, and promoters typically supply audio, lighting and staging. Brick, concrete and high ceilings give the rooms dramatic character but can create reflections if a system is poorly tuned. Recent visitors have described the sound as excellent at well-produced events and inconsistent at others.

Getting There and Parking

The public-facing address is 592 Johnson Avenue, between Gardner and Stewart avenues in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Stage entrances are at 211 and 215 Ingraham Street on the opposite side of the complex. Follow the entrance printed on your ticket rather than assuming that every event uses the same gate.

The Jefferson Street L subway station is around the corner, making the train the simplest option for most visitors. The L provides a direct connection from Manhattan through Union Square and Williamsburg. Allow extra time on nights with planned service changes. Jefferson Street currently requires stairs; accessibility improvements, including elevators, have been announced but were not complete as of August 2026.

The 1896 has no public parking lot or venue garage. Street parking is sometimes easier during evenings and weekends because the surrounding blocks remain partly industrial, but spaces are never guaranteed and posted regulations must be observed. There is no standard venue parking charge. Rideshare passengers should use the entrance named by the event and avoid stopping directly in front of active loading bays.

Inside the Venue

Expect a warehouse rather than a polished theater lobby. Entry layouts, metal detection, bag searches, ID checks and wristbands are installed by the event organizer. The interconnected rooms retain raw brick, worn patina, steel trusses and scenic-painted surfaces, but the complex is fully built out for professional production, with private dressing rooms, holding areas, Wi-Fi and ground-level loading.

The interior stages are heated and ventilated. They do not have permanent air conditioning, although dressing rooms and the flex space are air-conditioned, and fans are used during warmer months. Summer attendees should dress for a large industrial room rather than assuming club-level climate control. Roll-up doors may be opened when event design, noise and weather permit.

The venue has three regular interior restrooms and another in an executive dressing area when that room is accessible. Larger events may be required to install portable facilities, including ADA-accessible units. This explains conflicting visitor reports: some shows provide indoor bathrooms, while others restrict backstage facilities and place portable toilets in or near the courtyard.

Food, bars, merchandise and coat check are event-specific. The 1896 does not operate permanent public concessions or in-house catering; outside licensed caterers and event vendors build these services. Some overnight events have offered full bars, festival-style food and coat check, while smaller performances may provide fewer amenities. Alcohol service requires the appropriate permit and makes the event 21 or older under the venue’s stated rules.

Production, Sound and Lighting

Each indoor stage has approximately 450 amps of total electrical capacity, including a three-phase CAM-LOK connection and distributed outlets. The venue has ground-level drive-in access, loading bays, rentable distribution equipment, a scissor lift, water sources, blockable natural light and beams suitable for event rigging. Exact loads and suspended installations require advance technical approval.

Area 2’s skylights can be covered quickly; Area 3’s larger skylight system requires advance work and usually a lift. Area 4 has no skylights and is therefore the simplest room to black out. The venue can support projection mapping, truss lighting, scenic builds and haze with proper permits, but mineral-oil haze is prohibited. Open flames and certain special effects require separate fire-safety approval.

The buildings are considered suitable for recording sound, but The 1896 does not describe itself as a fully isolated soundstage. Productions requiring clean recording are advised to reserve adjoining rooms and choose suitable hours. For live events, the absence of a published permanent PA means the promoter and audio contractor have a major influence on the audience experience.

Nearby Amenities

The immediate blocks are a mixture of production businesses, warehouses, studios, nightlife and newer food-and-drink destinations. Restaurants and bars are more concentrated toward Wyckoff Avenue and the streets around Jefferson Street, Troutman Street and Moore Street. Leave time for a walk and check kitchen hours in advance, especially before a late Sunday show or after an event ending near sunrise.

Full-service hotels are limited in the venue’s immediate industrial pocket. Visitors commonly look toward Williamsburg, Long Island City or Manhattan, using the L train or a rideshare for the final portion of the trip. If an event ends after normal subway service becomes less frequent, compare the late-night train schedule with rideshare availability before entering the venue.

What Makes The 1896 Special

The venue’s greatest strength is that its industrial appearance is authentic rather than decorative. Its walls, skylights, smokestack, freight infrastructure and courtyard survive from an 1896 manufacturing complex, while modern power and production systems allow promoters to transform those features with lighting, sound, scenery and projection. It feels like a film location because it remains an active one.

The 1896 has also occupied an unusual place in Brooklyn music history. A 2009 all-ages show brought together Dan Deacon, Future Islands, Vivian Girls, Woods and other Brooklyn and Baltimore acts for $3. Later bookings included SOPHIE, Robert Hood, Green Velvet, Claude VonStroke and Yaeji-associated programming. The progression mirrors Bushwick’s evolution from DIY warehouse shows toward large experiential productions.

Its community contribution is both cultural and practical. The complex preserves historic industrial buildings, provides studios for artists and creative businesses, supports film-industry vendors and brings public audiences into a working manufacturing district. No reliable study quantifies its local economic impact, but its continued mixed use offers a clear alternative to replacing old industrial property solely with new residential development.

Visitor Tips and Information

Arrive 30 to 45 minutes before the advertised performance if the event has multiple ID and security checks. Wear comfortable shoes: most public events are standing, floors are concrete, and moving between stages can involve crowded industrial doorways. For overnight events, bring a light layer even if the main dance floor is warm because the courtyard and portable-restroom area may be cold.

There is no universal public bag, photography, reentry or dress policy. Some electronic events prohibit photography, require masquerade masks or enforce final exit; others permit ordinary concert photography. Read the specific event terms before leaving home. Large backpacks, professional cameras and outside food or alcohol should not be assumed acceptable without explicit organizer approval.

Wheelchair users and visitors who require an accessible restroom should confirm the event’s approved layout before purchasing. The principal stages are at ground level with wide loading entrances, but mezzanines, loft areas and some support spaces require stairs. Jefferson Street station is not yet step-free, so an accessible bus, paratransit service or rideshare may be the more practical route.

Frequently Asked Questions

What events are coming to The 1896?

As of August 24, 2026, Sistek is announced for October 30 and HILLS for October 31. The schedule changes irregularly because The 1896 remains primarily a production studio rather than a full-time club. Public events tend to cluster around fashion week, spring Masquerade season, Halloween and New Year’s Eve.

Where should I buy tickets for The 1896?

Use the authorized ticket option attached to the current event listing. The venue does not maintain a conventional daily box office for its public calendar. Avoid purchasing from an unverified seller, particularly when the address was initially promoted as a secret warehouse location. Save your ticket and event instructions offline before traveling.

How much do tickets usually cost?

Recent public dance events have commonly advertised admission from approximately $35 to $100, depending on release tier, production scale and date. Major holiday events, international lineups and multi-stage experiences generally cost more. VIP or backstage upgrades are promoter-specific, and quoted prices may not include processing fees or coat check.

What is The 1896’s capacity?

The standard limit is up to 275 guests without a Temporary Permit of Assembly. A permitted, all-access production can accommodate approximately 1,200 people, subject to the approved event floor plan. Area 3 is estimated at around 500 standing, while Areas 2 and 4 each hold roughly 275 before staging and equipment are added.

Does The 1896 have assigned seating?

No. The venue has no permanent seats or numbered sections. Most concerts and electronic events use general-admission standing floors. Organizers can install temporary theater seating, dining tables, risers or VIP lounges, so the arrangement may look completely different from one event to another. Check the ticket description if seated access is important.

Which room is the main stage?

Area 3 usually functions as the main room because it provides approximately 4,000 square feet and a 37-foot ceiling peak. Its larger footprint supports headline performances, projection and substantial lighting installations. Areas 2 and 4 are typically used for secondary stages or lounges, although promoters can reverse that arrangement.

What address should guests use?

Most public-event instructions use 592 Johnson Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11237. The production-side entrances are 211 and 215 Ingraham Street. Because the buildings connect through the block, both addresses identify the same complex but not necessarily the same entrance. Always follow the address and door directions printed on your ticket.

What is the nearest subway station?

Jefferson Street on the L line is the closest station and is only a short walk from the venue. The L runs through Williamsburg and connects directly with Union Square in Manhattan. Check for overnight construction before late events. Jefferson Street currently uses stairs and is scheduled for future accessibility improvements.

Is The 1896 wheelchair accessible?

The principal event stages are on the ground floor and have wide, drive-in loading entrances, making basic step-free access possible in many configurations. However, the historic complex has upper mezzanines and support areas reached by stairs. Accessible restrooms may be portable units for large events. Confirm the specific event layout before buying tickets.

Is there parking at The 1896?

No dedicated guest parking lot or garage is provided. Drivers rely on legal street parking in the surrounding industrial area, where availability varies by event time and nearby production activity. Read every posted sign and keep loading gates clear. For large public events, the subway or a rideshare is generally more predictable than driving.

Are the bathrooms indoors?

The facility has permanent interior bathrooms, but public-event access depends on the organizer’s layout and which backstage areas are blocked. Events exceeding roughly 150 guests may need portable restrooms, including ADA-accessible units. Visitors have reported both indoor facilities and courtyard portable toilets, so prepare for the arrangement to vary by show.

Does The 1896 have food and drinks?

There are no permanent public concessions or in-house catering operation. Licensed outside vendors create bars and food service for each event. Large overnight parties may offer full bars and simple festival food, while smaller concerts may have limited options. Alcohol events follow the venue’s 21-and-older requirement and require valid government-issued identification.

Is coat check available?

Coat check is not a guaranteed permanent amenity, but it has been provided at major warehouse parties, including recent Masquerade editions. Its location and fee are set by the event producer. During winter, bring a layer but avoid carrying unnecessary items, as exterior queues and portable-restroom areas can be considerably colder than the dance floors.

What is the bag policy?

The 1896 does not publish one universal bag policy for every public event. Security procedures are established by the promoter and may differ between a concert, runway show and overnight party. A small bag is the safest choice. Professional camera cases, large backpacks and equipment should be cleared with the organizer before arrival.

Can I take photographs inside?

Photography rules vary. Some private and fashion events encourage images, while several underground electronic productions have explicitly operated as no-photo gatherings. Flash, detachable-lens cameras and filming are more likely to be restricted than ordinary phone photography. Follow posted signs and staff instructions, and never photograph performers or attendees who request privacy.

Are events at The 1896 always 21 and older?

No universal age applies to every possible production, but most recent warehouse parties have been 21 and older. The venue states that events serving alcohol must exclude guests under 21. Concerts without alcohol could theoretically use another policy, so rely on the age requirement printed on the individual ticket rather than past practice.

Is the courtyard open when it rains?

Events are generally promoted as rain or shine, but organizers may cover, reduce or relocate courtyard programming. During the April 2026 Masquerade, the outdoor stage was moved inside because of rain while three indoor stages remained active. Wear weather-appropriate clothing because entry lines and restroom access may still involve outdoor areas.

Why is the venue called The 1896?

The name comes from the year the original factory buildings were erected. The complex formed part of a larger industrial block during Bushwick’s manufacturing expansion and initially produced electrical conduit. Rather than concealing that history, the venue preserves its brickwork, skylights, steel structure, freight equipment and weathered surfaces as central parts of its identity.
