About BOXCAR

Boxcar is a lively sports bar and grill in downtown Santa Fe, famous as a local hangout and entertainment spot. Located at 133 W. Water St (just off the Santa Fe Plaza), it celebrates the city’s railroad heritage even as it serves modern sports-bar classics. Opened in 2015 by Santa Fe restaurateurs, Boxcar quickly earned a reputation for its high-energy atmosphere. It even boasted “the longest bar in Santa Fe” after doubling its bar length in its original location . The menu – crafted by James-Beard-recognized chef Eric Stumpf – features gourmet twists on pub food. Unique features include a raised stage for live music, a dedicated billiards (pool) room, and multiple big-screen TVs for game watching . Boxcar’s late hours (mostly 2 AM closing) and constant entertainment have made it a staple of the Santa Fe nightlife scene – one reviewer notes it’s “one of the few bars open until 2 AM” in the city . The décor mixes craft cocktails and sports memorabilia, giving a casual yet upscale vibe, and the friendly staff and crowd give it a neighborhood feel.

Events and Programming

Boxcar offers live entertainment just about every night. Weekly highlights include karaoke (hosted by Crash Romeo on Wednesday nights at 8 PM and Sundays at 7 PM) and themed music nights. Country Night (featuring live country singer Larry Hamilton) and Latin/“Bad Bunny” dance nights draw crowds with popular hits and themed DJs. Fridays and other weekends often feature local DJs (notably Dynamite Sol, voted Best DJ in Santa Fe) spinning hip-hop and top-40, while some Saturdays include live piano dinner sets by Kyle Moore. The boxcar’s stage and sound system accommodate local bands and DJ events, and the whole space turns into a dance floor or sports lounge depending on the night. Major games (NFL, college football, basketball, etc.) are broadcast on dozens of TVs throughout, so weekday game days turn Boxcar into a sports viewing party. Importantly, most events do not require tickets or cover charges – just arrive and plan for a lively crowd. (Rare special events or after-parties – like film festival or local college events – may have a cover.)

Tickets and Booking

Boxcar is a walk-in sports bar, so you generally do not need tickets or seats. There is no box office or online ticketing: simply arrive and order at the bar or a table. For big groups or dinner service, Boxcar offers online reservations (via its website or reservation link) . This is recommended on busy weekend evenings to avoid waiting. In practice, reservations primarily guarantee a dining table – the event areas (dance floor, bar stools, pool tables) are still first-come. There is normally no cover charge for nightly entertainment or for watching sports, though occasionally special featured acts (celebrity DJs or holiday parties) might charge a small cover at the door. Boxcar does host private parties and catering – you can inquire about banquet menus and event rental space through their private events contact. In short, casual drop-in attendance is welcome, and you only pay for your food and drinks when you get there.

Seating and Layout

The interior is laid out like an American pub with an oversized horseshoe-shaped bar as the centerpiece. Bar seating (high stools) wraps around this long bar – famous as “the longest bar in Santa Fe” after expansion . Surrounding the bar are booths and dining tables in the main room for sit-down meals. A raised performance stage occupies one corner, so seats and tables near it are ideal for live music, DJs or karaoke performances. On the other side, a dedicated Billiards Suite holds full-size pool tables in a quieter zone behind the main area . There is outdoor seating available on the patio – an advantage on warm evenings and for patrons with dogs (see below). In other words, Boxcar offers mix-and-match seating: high-tops at the bar, booth seating along the walls, and an outdoor patio. The bar area is lively with service, so if you prefer quieter dining or a full view of the stage, a booth or patio table may be better. A few raised stools give extra view of the dance floor. Sightlines are generally good – most spots can see at least one TV for games – but for the best game-watching experience grab a seat at the bar in front of a screen. Note that fullness can occur on busy nights, so arriving early is wise if you need a table in a preferred area.

Getting There and Parking

Boxcar is centrally located in downtown Santa Fe – just west of the historic Plaza. The exact address is 133 West Water Street, Santa Fe, NM 87501. It sits a couple of blocks west of the Palace of the Governors and the Town Hall. By public transit: Santa Fe Trails bus lines 1, 2 and 6 (among others) stop within a block or two. The downtown Transit Center (on West San Francisco) is about a 5–10 minute walk away, providing connections citywide . The city’s new Canyon Road shuttle also includes a stop nearby. By car: Street parking is metered in this part of downtown (generally $1–$2 per hour, free after 6PM). Nearby public parking lots include the Water Street Municipal Lot (100 E. Water St., ~$2/hr) and Sandoval Street Garage. Larger nearby lots at Santa Fe Place Mall (south on Cerrillos Rd) offer long-term parking for a fee (and shuttle/bus service). Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) or taxi drop-offs can be made on Water Street or West DeVargas, just outside Boxcar’s doors. The area is very walkable and safe; if staying downtown, no special logistics are needed. It’s wise to arrive a bit early on weekend nights to secure parking or ride-sharing, as downtown spots can fill up. Nearby cross streets: Water St., Sandoval St., San Francisco St., which helps orient GPS or maps.

Inside the Venue

Expect a friendly, high-energy atmosphere inside Boxcar. It’s a casual sports bar vibe – loud music when DJs play, cheering for sporting events, conversation, and bartenders always mixing something creative. On weekdays, the crowd is often locals grabbing lunch or happy hour drinks; later in the week it turns into a party scene under the neon lights. Boxcar’s menu spans brunch (breakfast burritos, waffles), to burgers, chicken wings, nachos and more – all with creative twists like the signature “Carboni Club” sandwich with beer gravy . There are gluten-free and vegetarian options (even a dedicated GF fryer) . The beverage menu is equally robust: dozens of local and craft beers on tap, specialty cocktails (house margaritas, the spicy jalapeño “Mamacita”), and a good wine selection. Happy Hour runs weekdays ~3:30–5:30PM with drink specials ($6 margaritas, $5 wines, $1 off drafts, etc.) , so it’s popular for after-work gatherings. The service tends to be friendly and energetic; several reviews praise the staff by name. Restrooms are on-site (ask staff for the location). Connectivity: though Boxcar doesn’t advertise free Wi-Fi (it’s primarily a bar), AT&T/Verizon work well indoors. There’s no coat check, and tables do not lock belongings, so keep personal items secure. Dress code is relaxed – jeans, boots, sports jerseys or comfy clothes are all fine. All ages are welcome during dining hours: indeed, kids even eat free on Saturday mornings . (After dark it becomes mostly 21+, so plan accordingly.) In short, Boxcar inside is full-service casual: order at the bar or table as you like, enjoy the upbeat surroundings, and get ready for a long evening – food is served late (until ~1 AM) to fuel your night out .

Nearby Amenities

The Plaza and downtown area around Boxcar are packed with dining and entertainment options. For pre-show or nearby dining, famous Santa Fe restaurants are just steps away. Mexican eateries like Tia Sophia’s (breakfast burritos) and La Cumbre (handmade tamales) are within a block, while the classic Plaza Courtyard restaurants (La Posada’s El Patio, Plaza Café) are a few minutes’ walk. For drinks before or after Boxcar, try sister bars on the Plaza such as La Mandolina or Sister Bar. If you’re staying overnight, hotels like the Hilton Santa Fe Historic Plaza, Inn of Santa Fe, and La Fonda Hotel are within easy walking distance. Public Transit: the ABQ-Santa Fe Shuttle and the New Mexico Rail Runner train stop at the Santa Fe Depot (about 2 miles south, a short cab ride). For late nights, rideshares and local taxis (call or use an app) are readily available around downtown. (There is no overnight street meter enforcement in downtown, but enforcement exists until 6–10PM.) Shopping and sight-seeing (art galleries, museums) are also around the Plaza, which can make a Boxcar visit part of a broader downtown excursion. Finally, note that Boxcar’s kitchen stays open late – it’s a popular spot for late-night snacks after concerts or movies nearby – so you won’t find better post-show food into the early morning hours.

What Makes This Venue Special

Boxcar stands out for its unique blend of qualities. First, its scale and energy are rare for Santa Fe – it’s not just a quiet pub, but one of the city’s only true late-night “live music sports bars” . It regularly earns local accolades (for 2024–25 it won Best Late Night Hangout and Best Bar in the Santa Fe Reporter’s “Best of Santa Fe,” and its own DJ and chef won awards) . Architecturally, it transformed an old downtown space into a vast open bar area, even claiming the town’s longest bar . There’s also genuine culinary muscle behind it: despite the casual setting, Boxcar’s kitchen is led by a nationally recognized chef , so the food can be unexpectedly gourmet (like avocado tempura with crema verde). Culturally, Boxcar embraces its railroad-theme name – appearing to honor Santa Fe’s AT&SF history – but it’s firmly a modern entertainment hub. The venue has become known as a gathering spot for Santa Fe’s nightlife, especially since it was founded by local veterans of the restaurant scene. In practice, what makes Boxcar special is how it caters to many crowds at once: sports fans cheering games on big screens, concert-goers and locals dancing to DJs, friends out for cocktails and bar food, and even families at brunch. The result is a uniquely laid-back yet lively place that both accepts everyone and embodies the city’s flavor. (As one reviewer put it: “Santa Fe’s favorite hangout any time of day” .)

Visitor Tips and Information

• Plan late-night travel: Boxcar’s prime hours are evenings through 2 AM . If you’re driving, remember paid parking closes earlier, so arrange rideshares or safely park before you arrive. Ride-share drop-offs on Water or Sandoval are convenient.
• Check the event schedule: Karaoke nights (Wed & Sun) start around 7–8PM. Live music/DJ nights often begin late (9–10PM), so early dinners might run into downtime between shows. The Boxcar website and social media list weekly events (e.g. “Country Night,” “Latin Night,” etc.) – plan your visit around something you like.
• Happy Hour and deals: Take advantage of weekday happy hour (3:30–5:30PM Mon–Fri) for discounted drinks and appetizers , and a local lunch discount (15% off food Mon–Thu until 2PM) . Brunch on weekends can be busy – kids eat free Saturday 9AM–1PM .
• ID and age: Expect an ID check for alcohol. Lunch and early evenings are all-ages, but after dark it’s mostly a 21+ crowd (though families are still welcome early). If bringing teens, note there is loud music late at night.
• What to bring: ID for drinks, cash or card (all major cards accepted). Boxes on walls may have coat/check (~none likely, but staff will help with coats). You can bring a small camera/phone, but no detached folding seats. No outside food or drink.
• Dress code: Casual and comfy. Some wear boots/casual attire. Leave high heels for older adults (crowd and dancing can break tables out).
• Accessibility: The venue is on street level with one-step entrance (check with staff if wheelchair access is a concern). Restrooms should be accessible (ask if needed).
• Pets: (Patio only.) Dogs are welcome at outdoor patio tables , but not inside the bar (per health codes in Santa Fe). So lunch on the patio is pet-friendly, evenings inside are pet-free.
• Noise level: Expect moderate to high volume. If you’re sensitive, ask for a booth or patio.
• Insider tip: The bartenders’ specialty cocktails (like the jalapeño “Mamacita”) and craft beer selection are worth trying, and locals especially praise the Brussels sprouts and bacon-mac’n’cheese . Also, it’s easy to lose track of time here – plan a safe ride home after closing!

Reservations guarantee you a table for meals, but standing-room areas and bar space remain open to all guests. What are Boxcar’s hours of operation?

Boxcar’s regular hours are: Mon–Fri 11:00 AM–2:00 AM, Sat 9:00 AM–2:00 AM, and Sun 9:00 AM–12:00 AM . Kitchen serves late-night eats (until about 1:00 AM or so). Is there parking available for Boxcar?

Boxcar sits in downtown Santa Fe, where street parking is metered (generally ~$1–$2/hour, free after 6 PM or on Sundays). There are public lots nearby – for example, the 156-space Water Street municipal lot (100 E Water St) at about $2/hour – and the Sandoval Street parking structure. Early arrival on busy nights is advised. Many guests also rely on rideshare or the local shuttle from Santa Fe Place Mall to avoid parking hassles downtown.

Is Boxcar wheelchair accessible?

Boxcar’s entrance is on street level, but it’s an older building so check with hosts on accessibility. The main dining area is open-concept, and restrooms are on the same floor. If you have specific accessibility needs (ramp, seating, restroom access), it’s best to call ahead. Otherwise, most visitors find the main floor to be navigable for wheelchairs and strollers.

Does Boxcar have reservations or a box office for events?

Boxcar does not sell event tickets or have a formal box office. All events – live music, karaoke, sports nights – are typically first-come, first-served within its normal admission. Make table reservations if you want guaranteed seating for a meal or party, but otherwise just show up. Outstanding events (if any) might be advertised as “first come” entry without ticketing.

What kinds of payment does Boxcar accept?

As a full-service restaurant and bar, Boxcar takes cash and all major credit/debit cards (Visa, MasterCard, etc.). They also have tap-to-pay options. Driver’s license or ID may be required if you pay by card, since alcohol is served. Some patrons like to carry cash for faster service at the bar, but credit cards are widely accepted.

Do I need to bring ID to Boxcar?

Bring a valid photo ID if you plan to drink. Boxcar serves alcohol with meals and at the bar, so everyone ordering booze will be ID’d (21+ check). If you’re just coming for lunch or early dinner and are under 21, you can come with family, but after evening hits, the crowd is mostly 21+. It’s safest to have ID on you in case the door staff asks.

Is there a dress code at Boxcar?

No formal dress code – casual attire is perfectly fine. You’ll see patrons in anything from jeans and T-shirts to boots and button-downs. The vibe is relaxed sports-bar style. If you’re there for a theme night, locals might dress up (e.g. Western wear for Country night), but generally come comfortable and you’ll fit right in.

What food and drink is available at Boxcar?

Boxcar’s menu is a gourmet take on pub fare. Expect burgers, wings, salads, nachos, and creative sandwiches (the beer-gravy “Carboni Club” is famous ). They serve breakfast/brunch items on weekends. The bar carries dozens of draft beers (including local brews), a full cocktail menu (house margaritas, custom cocktails like the spicy Mamacita), plus wine. There are vegetarian and gluten-free options (they even have a dedicated GF fryer) . Happy Hour specials (cheaper drinks and apps) run weekday afternoons .

Can I bring my pet to Boxcar?

Small dogs are welcome, but only at the outdoor patio seating. Inside Boxcar is a no-pet zone due to health regulations. So bring your dog if you’re eating or drinking on the patio; otherwise, pets stay at home or in your car. Staff will usually seat you on the patio if you arrive with a friendly pup .

What sports can I watch at Boxcar?

All major sports are on the screens at Boxcar. The bar subscribes to major sports packages – NFL, NCAA football and basketball, NBA, hockey, baseball, soccer, you name it. They’ll often show big national games. If a game is on TV, it’s likely on at Boxcar. On game days it turns into a lively viewing party, so arrive early to claim a seat and inform the staff if there’s a specific game you want on (Santa Fe is usually happy to tune it in).

Are minors allowed at Boxcar?

Yes, minors accompanied by an adult are allowed during dining hours. Boxcar is family-friendly for brunch, lunch and early dinners, and even offers a kids-eat-free promotion on Saturday mornings . After dark (especially late-night, say 10 PM onward), the crowd shifts to 21+, so check with staff if you have teens. Just keep in mind it can get loud with music and games.

Is Boxcar suitable for large groups or private events?

Absolutely – Boxcar often hosts groups and can accommodate private bookings. They have semi-private dining sections and even whole-venue buyouts for events. There’s on-site catering (for Boxcar itself or off-site catering through them) and a party menu. For a large party, call ahead or use the website’s event inquiry link, as weekends fill up fast. Groups should reserve to ensure adequate seating.

What does the name “Boxcar” refer to?

“Boxcar” is a nod to Santa Fe’s railroad heritage (the old Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe railway ended at the Plaza, and many local spots embrace train names). While the building isn’t a train car, the theme carries through in subtle décor choices and names (for example, beer taps and arts on the wall). It’s more thematic branding than anything; patrons don’t see a literal boxcar, but it gives the venue a unique identity tied to local history.

Is there Wi-Fi at Boxcar?

Boxcar does not prominently advertise customer Wi-Fi (it’s mainly an entertainment bar), and connectivity can be spotty. Some reviewers mention inconsistent Wi-Fi. If you need internet access, cellular data (4G/5G) generally works fine inside. The focus here is more on community and events rather than a quiet workspace.
