Events and Programming

France Lynch Pleasure Ground is an outdoor community recreation ground rather than a conventional concert venue. Its principal ticketed event is Chalfest, the volunteer-run “Party on the Hill”, which transforms the field into a two-day, multi-stage festival each July. The programme combines established pop, rock and dance names with tribute acts, DJs, local bands, brass music, drum and bass, reggae, comedy, craft workshops, children’s entertainment, food traders and community stalls. The festival’s current licence permits audiences of up to 7,500, although that figure is a maximum rather than a guaranteed attendance.

The recent booking history shows how broad the programming can be. The postponed 2021 festival moved to July 2022, when performers included Björn Again, Reef, Alexandra Burke, Hugh Cornwell and Seb Fontaine. The 2023 event presented Melanie C, Arrested Development, Republica, the Neville Staple Band and Dick & Dom. Gok Wan, Craig Charles, The Wurzels and The Beat featured in 2024, followed in 2025 by Kula Shaker, Fisherman’s Friends, Judge Jules, Toby Lee and numerous local and emerging acts.

Chalfest 2026 continued that mixture of nostalgia, dance music and contemporary festival entertainment, with Heather Small, Chesney Hawkes, Tinchy Stryder, Charlie Hedges, Discoliscious and a substantial jungle, drum-and-bass and reggae programme. Alongside the main acts were comedy, circus performance, science shows, craft sessions, local choirs and orchestras, family play and community organisations. This is the venue’s defining programming style: recognisable national performers share the bill with grassroots artists and village groups.

The ground also accommodates smaller seasonal gatherings. Recent examples include Chalford Band’s outdoor concerts, the free Picnic in the Park marking the band’s 140th anniversary in 2025, and the Chalford Hill Bonfire Night organised as a school fundraiser. The latter typically combines a bonfire, professional fireworks, food, drink and family entertainment. These events are less elaborate than Chalfest and may use only part of the field.

Planning extends beyond the most recent festival. Early-bird sales have opened for Chalfest 2027, with event pages showing Friday 16 and Saturday 17 July 2027. No dependable full 2027 line-up had been published by August 2026. A time-limited premises licence has also been granted for two-day festivals in July 2027 and July 2028, indicating an intention to continue the annual event.

Tickets and Booking

There is no permanent box office at France Lynch Pleasure Ground. Tickets for Chalfest and other paid events are released by each organiser through its authorised online sale. For Chalfest, one ticket normally covers both festival days, and every attendee requires a ticket, including babies and children whose admission may be free. Tickets are scanned at the entrance and exchanged for wristbands, which must remain intact for re-entry and the second day.

Recent general adult prices illustrate the likely range rather than guaranteeing future charges: approximately £42 in 2022, around £70 in 2024 and roughly £79–£80 for the later 2025 and 2026 editions. Youth admission has recently been about £19–£22, while children aged 11 and under have usually been free but still ticketed. Discounted community tickets are released for qualifying residents and families connected with nearby schools; recent community adult admission has been considerably cheaper than general sale.

Early-bird, community, parking and shuttle allocations can sell out before the main adult allocation. Anyone planning to drive or travel from Stroud should reserve transport at the same time as admission. Community tickets are normally available for a limited sales window and may require proof of address or photographic identification at the gate. Tickets have generally been non-refundable unless the event is cancelled or postponed.

About France Lynch Pleasure Ground

The venue remains open and in use under the name France Lynch Pleasure Ground. It lies between Chalford Hill and France Lynch and is controlled by Chalford Parish Council in its role as trustee of the local recreation-ground charity. Outside organised events it is a freely accessible public green space with children’s play areas, a basketball and five-a-side court, outdoor exercise equipment and open grass.

No authoritative record gives a precise public opening date. The ground was once part of an old common containing species-rich limestone grassland. A surviving section is now managed with reduced mowing, and approximately 60 plant species have been identified, including rock rose, wild thyme, cowslip and devil’s-bit scabious. This pocket of biodiversity gives the field a character not normally associated with a temporary festival site.

A YMCA hut once stood on the pleasure ground and was extensively used for community purposes before burning down during the 1950s. Modern improvements have included the multi-use games area in 2015, adult exercise equipment in 2016 and a new play area opened in July 2020. A section of the boundary wall was also rebuilt by local footpath volunteers during 2024.

Chalfest began in 2017 and established the ground as a significant temporary live-event location. The festival is organised by a not-for-profit community interest company, supported by close to 100 volunteers in recent years. Its stated aims include giving local groups free pitches from which they retain their proceeds, creating volunteering and work-experience opportunities, supporting emerging talent and reinforcing community identity.

Seating and Festival Layout

There are no permanent seats, grandstands, boxes, balconies or fixed VIP sections. Chalfest uses a general-admission layout spread across the grass. Recent editions have included a Main Stage, a second live-band stage, the youth-focused Upstage, Aubrey’s Village Green, a comedy and children’s marquee, workshop tents, community and market stalls, bars, food traders, first aid and temporary toilets. Exact positions can change annually.

The Main Stage lawn is the best area for headline performances and large communal singalongs. A central position facing the stage generally provides a more balanced view and sound than standing far to one side. The front is intended primarily for standing and dancing; festival rules have prohibited chairs directly in front of the Main Stage and inside the smaller bar-stage areas. Visitors using camping chairs should follow the event’s marked chair zones.

Aubrey’s Village Green is better suited to relaxed local performances, brass music and a less intense atmosphere. Upstage attracts younger audiences and presents bass-heavy electronic music, hip-hop, jungle and reggae. A sound barrier has been used around this area to reduce the effect on neighbouring homes. An accessible viewing area is provided for major performances, but arrangements should be confirmed when booking because the site plan can change.

Production, Sound and Lighting

The pleasure ground has no permanent stage, public-address system, lighting rig, roof, control room or backstage complex. Chalfest brings in temporary stages and event infrastructure for each edition. Manufacturers, speaker models, lighting quantities and stage dimensions have not been publicly specified, so visitors and incoming performers should not treat the site as a permanently equipped concert venue.

Published licensing controls are more detailed. Music must finish at 9.30pm, with public access ending by 10pm. Noise at nearby sensitive properties is limited to 65 dB LAeq over 15 minutes, while the 63 Hz and 125 Hz frequency bands must not exceed 70 dB. A qualified noise consultant is required, levels are set and monitored at the mixing position, and engineers must reduce the sound if necessary.

Getting There and Parking

The everyday address is France Lynch Pleasure Ground, Burcombe Way, Chalford, Stroud, Gloucestershire GL6 8LL. Festival traffic may be directed using a different event or car-park postcode, so drivers should use the instructions attached to their parking pass rather than relying solely on the recreation-ground address. The site is surrounded by residential roads where event parking is tightly controlled.

There is no general public parking inside the festival enclosure. Recent editions have used pre-booked parking near Highfield Way or Chalford School Playing Field, with overflow parking at Chalford Sports and Social Club. Recent overflow charges have been around £10 per car. Blue Badge parking has been provided on hardstanding or at the sports club without the standard parking charge, although spaces require advance arrangement.

Roads including Tylers Way and Down View may be marshalled, coned or restricted to residents. Parking on verges or surrounding streets can obstruct emergency access and jeopardise future events. There is no formal rideshare rank; passengers should follow marshal instructions and arrange collection away from restricted junctions. Allow additional time after headline sets because thousands of people leave through a small network of village roads.

Bus 67 connects Chalford Hill and Bussage with Stroud and Cashes Green. Services 54 and 54A use the A419 corridor between Stroud, Chalford and Cirencester, although frequencies can be limited. Burcombe Way and Brantwood Road are among the nearest local stops. Stroud is the practical railhead, roughly six miles away; the former Chalford station closed in 1964. Recent festivals have operated limited pre-booked return shuttles from Stroud, particularly on Saturday.

Inside the Venue

Expect an outdoor festival field, not an indoor building. Entry involves ticket scanning, wristband collection and bag searches. Download ticket QR codes before travelling because mobile data and Wi-Fi can be sporadic. Security staff and stewards patrol both the enclosure and nearby streets, while first aid and the lost-children point have recently been positioned close to the main entrance.

Chalfest normally offers several bars, street-food traders, coffee, sweet stalls and a market. Reviews have noted choices ranging from pizza, burgers and paella to Thai, Mexican, Japanese, Caribbean and vegetarian food, although traders change annually. Payments are largely cashless, but carrying some cash is useful for community stalls. Picnics, sealed water and empty refillable bottles have been allowed; water refill points are provided.

There is no coat check, and secure storage has not been advertised. Merchandise may be available during the festival, but it is not a permanent venue service. Temporary toilets are installed for major events. Recent accessibility provision has included a Mobiloo with a hoist and personal-care facilities, positioned away from the Main Stage near the Village Green and Upstage areas.

Accessibility and Inclusive Facilities

As a British venue, France Lynch Pleasure Ground is governed by UK equality and accessibility requirements rather than the American ADA. Chalfest describes the site as wheelchair accessible and has offered an accessible viewing area, free reserved disabled parking, assistance-dog admission and a hoist-equipped Mobiloo. Organisers have also told licensing authorities that access arrangements have been changed in response to disabled visitors’ feedback.

The principal limitation is the natural surface. Grass can become soft, slippery or muddy after rain, and temporary trackway coverage may vary. Wheelchair users and people with limited mobility should arrive early, use the designated parking and viewing arrangements, and bring suitable weather protection. The ordinary park’s play and exercise areas should not be assumed to have the same temporary facilities available outside major events.

Nearby Amenities

France Lynch is a small residential settlement, so nearby eating and accommodation choices are limited compared with Stroud. Chalford Sports and Social Club is close to the ground and sometimes provides overflow parking. The Old Neighbourhood Inn on Midway is a practical local pub for food or drinks, but festival weekends are exceptionally busy and advance table booking is sensible.

For a wider choice of restaurants, pubs and conventional hotels, use Stroud and arrange transport before the event. Westley Farm near Chalford offers cottages and seasonal glamping and has previously been recommended by the festival, but it is not an on-site campsite. Chalfest prohibits camping and overnight stays in vehicles, so accommodation must be organised separately.

What Makes This Venue Special

France Lynch Pleasure Ground succeeds because it retains the feeling of a village green even when temporarily hosting national performers. A 2023 review praised its family-friendly atmosphere, varied food and range of entertainment despite persistent rain. Visitors in 2024 highlighted the craft stalls, workshops, charity games and the contrast between major performers and intimate community activity. Narrow lanes and changeable weather are genuine inconveniences, but they also distinguish the experience from a commercial arena festival.

The cultural impact is unusually direct. Local ensembles perform alongside touring artists, children receive dedicated activities, voluntary groups gain fundraising space and residents receive discounted tickets. Approximately 4,000 attendees have been described as coming from the Chalford area. Local food, drink, suppliers and volunteer labour keep a significant share of activity within the community, while the council’s licensing panel has formally described the festival as an organised asset to the area.

Visitor Tips and Venue Policies

Bring waterproof clothing, sun protection, sturdy footwear, a reusable bottle and a downloaded ticket. Large bags slow entry. Glass, outside alcohol, knives, sharp objects, gazebos and pop-up tents have been prohibited. Dogs are not admitted during Chalfest except assistance dogs. Food may be brought in, but unsealed liquids can be refused during searches. Anyone who appears intoxicated or behaves antisocially may be denied entry or removed.

There is no formal dress code. Festival clothing and practical layers are appropriate. Children’s supervision rules should be checked against the wording attached to the current ticket: 2026 public information required those aged 14 and under to enter with a responsible adult, while the premises-licence conditions stated that under-18s must be accompanied. Challenge 25 identification is used at bars.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is France Lynch Pleasure Ground still open?

Yes. It remains an active public recreation ground managed by Chalford Parish Council as trustee. Outside organised events, residents use its grass, play areas, sports court and exercise equipment. Temporary closures or restricted areas may be introduced while Chalfest, Bonfire Night or another community event is being built, operated or dismantled.

What is the capacity of France Lynch Pleasure Ground?

The ground has no fixed everyday capacity because it is an open public park. Chalfest’s premises licence allows up to 7,500 people, subject to the event-specific safety plan, available space and ticket sales. This should not be interpreted as permanent seated capacity or proof that every festival attracts exactly 7,500 attendees.

Is the venue indoors or outdoors?

It is entirely outdoors. Festival stages, marquees, bars, toilets, fencing and welfare areas are installed temporarily. There is no permanent auditorium or weatherproof audience hall. Performances generally continue in ordinary summer rain, so visitors should prepare for changing conditions rather than expecting indoor shelter for the full audience.

Does France Lynch Pleasure Ground have reserved seating?

No. Major events use general-admission standing and lawn areas. Visitors may bring camping chairs when the event rules permit them, but chair placement is controlled and chairs are not allowed in front of the Main Stage or inside some smaller stage areas. An accessible viewing zone is normally reserved separately for qualifying visitors.

How early should I arrive for Chalfest?

Allow at least 45–60 minutes before a must-see performance, particularly on Saturday. This provides time for village traffic, parking, the walk from the car park, bag searches and wristband collection. Earlier arrival also improves the choice of accessible viewing positions, chair areas and food queues before the headline audience builds.

Can I buy Chalfest tickets at the gate?

Do not rely on gate sales. Chalfest uses advance online tickets, and adult, youth, community, parking and shuttle allocations can sell out separately. Tickets are scanned for wristbands, while community discounts may require identification. Buying early is especially important if transport or accessible parking is required alongside admission.

Are children free at Chalfest?

Recent editions have admitted children aged 11 and under free of charge, but every child, including a baby, still needed a valid ticket. Youth tickets normally cover ages 12–16. Supervision rules vary in wording, so parents should use the age conditions issued with the current event ticket rather than assuming older teenagers can enter independently.

Can I bring my own food and drink?

Picnics, sealed water and empty reusable bottles have been permitted at recent festivals. Outside alcohol, glass and unsealed liquids are prohibited and can be confiscated during searches. Free water refill points are normally installed. Food policies can differ for smaller events, so Bonfire Night or band-concert visitors should follow that organiser’s instructions.

Are dogs allowed at France Lynch Pleasure Ground?

The public park and the ticketed festival have different rules. Chalfest operates as a dog-free event because of the crowds, food areas and activities, although recognised assistance dogs are welcome. Ordinary park users should keep dogs under control and observe local signage, particularly beside allotments, play equipment and the protected wildflower area.

Is there camping at Chalfest?

No. Camping is prohibited within France Lynch Pleasure Ground, and overnight stays in festival car parks or vehicles are not allowed. Visitors staying for both days need separate accommodation in Chalford, Stroud or the surrounding Cotswolds. Seasonal glamping exists nearby, but it is independently operated and should not be confused with an official festival campsite.

What happens if it rains?

Chalfest is normally a rain-or-shine outdoor event, supported by an adverse-weather plan required under its licence. Some stages and activity areas are covered, but most audience space is exposed grass. Bring waterproofs rather than an umbrella in dense crowds, wear footwear with grip and expect muddy routes after prolonged rain.

Is there mobile signal or public Wi-Fi?

Reliable public Wi-Fi should not be expected. The festival has warned that connectivity can be sporadic and recommends downloading ticket QR codes or printing them before arrival. Agree a meeting point with companions, save transport details offline and avoid depending on mobile data for entry, payments or arranging a lift at closing time.

Can I leave and re-enter the festival?

Yes, re-entry has been permitted with a valid, undamaged wristband. Bag searches may be repeated, and replacement wristbands are not normally issued. Anyone attending both days must keep the wristband attached overnight. Passing alcohol, prohibited objects or tickets through the perimeter can result in removal from the event.

Are professional cameras allowed?

No detailed public camera specification has been published for every event. Small personal cameras and phones are generally part of the festival environment, but professional equipment, tripods or commercial filming may require prior approval. Entry terms also state that audience members may be photographed or recorded by authorised festival and security teams.

Where is the quietest part of Chalfest?

Aubrey’s Village Green and nearby community or craft areas generally provide a calmer experience than the Main Stage or bass-focused Upstage. Noise still carries across an open field, so there is no completely quiet audience zone. Families with babies or visitors sensitive to sound should bring suitable hearing protection and avoid standing beside speaker positions.

Is France Lynch Pleasure Ground accessible outside festivals?

The ground is an open grass recreation space with entrances from surrounding village roads, play facilities and outdoor exercise equipment. Festival-only services such as accessible viewing, staffed welfare, temporary trackways and the Mobiloo are not normally present. Everyday accessibility therefore depends more heavily on weather, the grass surface and the user’s route into the park.
